"Phil Rushington's Friends; Or, Springvale Boys in a Lumber Camp" Do and Dare Weekly, March 31, 1900. By Stanley Norris. Three Springvale Academy students—Philip Rushington, John Grayson, and Vinton—venture into the Adirondack wilderness for a sporting expedition, traveling with a French-Canadian guide named Joe. Their journey progresses through snow and forest with comedic mishaps: sled breakdowns, an unruly horse, and disputes about "roads." En route, they encounter a shabby-genteel stranger, Professor Reginald Parker, claiming to be lost and hungry. Though initially suspicious, Rush and Vinton feed Parker a sandwich. When a red-faced, coarse-featured horseman on horseback arrives firing at Parker, claiming official authority, the youth challenges his brutality. The officer strikes Rush with a riding whip; Rush seizes the whip and, in turn, delivers sharp blows across the man's hands, shoulders, and face before releasing him. The episode reveals the boys' spirited defiance of authority and physical prowess.
