The Frozen Crew Of The Ice-Bound Ship; Or, Terrors Of The Arctic Region
· 1868

This penny dreadful issue presents *The Frozen Crew and Ice-Bound Ship; or, The Terrors of the Arctic Regions*, a romance of maritime adventure illustrated with engravings. The narrative opens aboard the pirate schooner *Malachor*, commanded by the ruthless Captain Paul Jones (a nom de guerre), a physically imposing Scotsman formerly in American naval service who now leads a crew of 165 desperadoes—Englishmen, Americans, Brazilians, Portuguese, Creoles, and Krotiten—many pressed into service from captured merchant vessels. As the ship drifts in Atlantic calm, crew members including the Spaniard Rotaldo, Black Bill, and De'il's Rob discuss a legendary phantom vessel, the *Flying Dutchman*, commanded by the spectral Vanderdecken. Rotaldo recounts a harrowing encounter with the ghostly ship accompanied by mysterious voices and cannon fire, which preceded his barque's near-sinking. When a stranger vessel approaches, Paul Jones dismisses supernatural warnings and vows to pursue it relentlessly, deriding superstition while preparing his well-armed ship for potential combat.
