Carried by Storm
CARRIED BY STORM By Mrs. May Agnes Fleming, this novel follows a mysterious household mystery centered on Sleaford's, a notorious haunted farmhouse. Years earlier, a man named Giles Sleaford was murdered—stabbed to death in an attic room—and the property has remained abandoned and feared ever since. Miss Olga Ventnor, a dramatic and epigrammatic woman, introduces the narrator to the haunted house during a carriage ride and hints at a deeper tragedy involving Joanna, a member of the Sleaford family. George Blake, a newspaper journalist, appears at the house gazing at Joanna's former window. Miss Ventnor cryptically suggests Joanna eloped with Blake and that she may have been "possessed of a demon." The narrative establishes an atmosphere of Gothic intrigue, blending supernatural legend with domestic scandal as the mystery of Joanna's fate and her connection to Blake unfolds.
