Street & Smith's New York Weekly
· September 22, 1894

This penny weekly presents a domestic scene of social confrontation: a well-dressed woman in fashionable 1890s attire commands the room while men in suits regard her with mixture of concern and deference. The serialized fiction inside—including the featured story "The Masked Bridal"—exemplifies the genre that dominated working-class reading. These cheap weeklies flooded the Victorian market with melodramatic tales of crime, betrayal, and social transgression, offering factory workers and servants vicarious entry into scandal and intrigue. Published by Street & Smith, a dominant American house, such serials provided serialized sensation at affordable prices. This tradition of disposable, plot-driven narrative directly shaped the comic book form that would emerge in the twentieth century.
