Marion Marlowe in Indianapolis: or The Adventure of Doctor Brookes This issue presents the opening serial installment of Grace Shirley's adventure story. Two con artists, Philip Dunlap and a man calling himself Denison, plot to rob a wealthy target: Dr. Brookes, an amateur actor with the Temple Theatrical Company who carries valuable jewelry and money. Dunlap schemes to lure the doctor to Pike Street by fabricating a tale of distress, where Denison will waylay him. Complicating their plan, Dunlap spots Miss Marion Marlowe, a beautiful theatrical star performing with Dr. Brookes's company, and becomes determined to make her acquaintance that evening despite her reputation for virtue and devotion to her art. Meanwhile, Marion and her friend Alma Allyn tour Indianapolis, optimistic after successful engagements in other cities. The issue also contains full-page advertisements for Dr. Slocum's medical remedies claiming to cure consumption and pulmonary diseases, with testimonial letters from satisfied patients.
