The New York Weekly
· June 26, 1858

This weekly serial presents "Nick Whiffles; or, the Guide of the Mountain," a tale of the Scottish Highlands. The cover illustration—a dark, Gothic scene of figures in peril amid rocky terrain—typifies the penny press formula: sensational imagery designed to arrest the eye of working-class readers on crowded newsstands. Such cheap weeklies, priced within reach of laborers and servants, serialized melodramatic fiction featuring crime, passion, and supernatural terror. Ornate mastheads and dense columns of text filled each issue, competing for attention through woodcut illustrations of violence and danger. These publications preceded comic books by decades, establishing the commercial model of serialized narrative art for mass audiences, while their reliance on stark moral contrasts and visual spectacle shaped the visual language comics would inherit.
