The Carpet-Bag, Vol. II, No. 1
· April 3, 1852

The Carpet-Bag (1851–1853) was a Boston weekly devoted to humor, burlesque, and light literature. This cover from Volume II shows the characteristic ornamental masthead with vignettes of domestic and social scenes, and a wood-engraved cartoon below: a fisherman in comic distress, apparently pursued by creatures emerging from the water. The paper published tall tales, satirical sketches, comic verse, and visual humor in the tradition of American burlesque journalism. It served readers seeking genteel amusement and literary wit—neither sensational penny dreadful nor serious periodical, but rather a middlebrow venue where early American humorists including Mark Twain and Artemus Ward found national audiences.
