Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner
· August 12, 1865

Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner was a weekly illustrated story paper published in New York, offering serialized fiction for family readers. This issue features an ornamental masthead and a wood-engraved illustration depicting an intimate domestic scene: a woman in an elaborate white gown stands before a seated man in formal dress, her train sweeping across an interior furnished with period furnishings and drapery. The scene conveys romantic drama or a crucial moment of emotion between the figures. As one of Frank Leslie's numerous picture papers, Chimney Corner combined affordable popular fiction with wood-cut illustrations—a formula that defined mass-market publishing in the 1860s and prefigured the illustrated periodicals and comic publications that followed.
