Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner
· August 19, 1865

Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner was a weekly illustrated story paper aimed at American family readers. This 1865 issue features a wood-engraved frontispiece depicting an indoor domestic scene: a woman reclines on a chair while another woman stands beside her, gesturing animatedly in conversation. Heavy drapery frames the window behind them, establishing an intimate parlor setting. The ornate masthead employs elaborate Victorian typography. Published by Frank Leslie's New York house, Chimney Corner serialized popular fiction—romances and adventures—alongside engravings that anchored each installment. As a cheap weekly, it exemplified the mass-market illustrated press that made serialized narrative accessible to broad audiences before the modern magazine era.
