Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner
Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner was a weekly illustrated story paper published in New York beginning in 1865, offering serialized fiction and adventures to middle-class American family readers. This issue features an ornate masthead and a wood-engraved illustration depicting a dramatic nighttime scene: a woman in flowing robes bends toward a seated figure beneath an ancient tree, while a full moon illuminates the landscape. The print exemplifies the paper's visual storytelling through skilled woodcut technique. As one of publisher Frank Leslie's many picture-paper ventures, Chimney Corner occupied the popular press between newspapers and dime novels—affordable weekly entertainment that combined serialized romance with wood-engraved images. These illustrated story papers reached thousands of readers and established the template for mass-market visual fiction that would evolve into twentieth-century comic books.
