Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner
· November 18, 1865

Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner, November 11, 1865. This weekly illustrated story paper carried serialized fiction for family readers at ten cents per issue. The wood-engraved frontispiece depicts a street scene: a woman in a long dark coat and bonnet stands before a brick wall posted with notices, while a man beside her points upward, his expression urgent or animated. Gas lamps and urban architecture recede into shadow behind them. The ornamental masthead in elaborate Victorian typography crowns the page. Part of Frank Leslie's publishing empire, Chimney Corner was among the first American periodicals to combine weekly serialized romance and adventure with abundant wood engravings—a formula that shaped popular illustrated journalism for decades and laid groundwork for later comic and pulp traditions.
