Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner, Vol. 1, No. 1
Frank Leslie's Chimney Corner, No. 1, June 3, 1865. This inaugural issue of a weekly story paper features an ornate masthead in elaborate Victorian letterpress style and a wood-engraved illustration depicting a street scene with well-dressed men in top hats and coats gathered around a central figure. The serialized fiction inside addresses a mass audience seeking affordable entertainment—working- and middle-class readers hungry for romance and adventure narratives. Leslie's publishing house flooded the American market with such illustrated weeklies, combining engravings with serialized stories at a penny or nickel per issue. These papers were direct ancestors of the pulp magazines and comic books that would follow, establishing the template of visual narrative paired with prose fiction for popular consumption.
