The Flag of Our Union (Vol. IX, No. 16)
This penny dreadful serialized *Ivan the Serf: The Russian and the Circassian*, a melodramatic tale of Russia, Turkey, and the Caucasus. Published for working-class readers at a price within reach of factory workers and servants, *The Flag of Our Union* exemplified the cheap sensation fiction that dominated Victorian popular reading. These serials mixed adventure, crime, and exotic locales to sustain audience suspense across installments, creating the commercial storytelling habits that would later define comic books. The ornamental typography and dense columns of text reflect the era's design traditions, while the sensational subject matter catered to mass appetite for thrills and moral instruction simultaneously.
