Young Folk's Weekly Budget
· 1878

Young Folk's Weekly Budget was a British penny weekly for boys and girls, serializing adventure fiction, historical romance, and school stories throughout the late nineteenth century. This cover illustrates 'Kairon, the Young Charioteer,' a serial by Alfred J. Philips set in ancient Egypt. The dramatic engraving shows a confrontation between a dark-skinned figure and two figures in classical dress, one of whom gestures defensively. The composition emphasizes action and peril—stock elements of the paper's adventure narratives. Such serials appealed to young readers through exotic historical settings, heroic protagonists, and clear visual storytelling. Cheap and widely distributed, Young Folk's Weekly Budget brought illustrated fiction to working-class and middle-class youth, shaping popular tastes in adventure literature.
