New York Clipper, Volume IV, No. 15
· Saturday, August 2, 1856

The New York Clipper, August 2, 1856. This issue displays the paper's characteristic layout: an ornamental masthead featuring classical columns and harbor scenes, beneath which sits a full-page engraved illustration titled "Daring Feat of an American Equestrienne," depicting a female acrobat performing on horseback. Below the image, two columns of dense text fill the page, interrupted by smaller sectional headings. Founded in 1853, the Clipper served as the leading trade weekly for American theatrical and sporting entertainment—covering the stage, minstrelsy, circus, prize-fighting, and emerging sports. Heavily illustrated and designed for newsstand appeal, it pioneered visual storytelling for mass audiences, presenting heroes and entertainment news through engravings that captured the period's popular diversions. The paper established a template that would evolve into modern entertainment weeklies.
