New York Clipper, Vol. IV, No. 16
The New York Clipper, established as the leading trade weekly for American popular entertainment, presents its densely illustrated front page from August 9, 1856. The ornamental masthead features classical figures flanking a panoramic engraving of New York's waterfront and cityscape. Below runs a prominent wood-engraved scene titled "Japanese Wrestlers—Bending the Joints," depicting two wrestlers in combat, exemplifying the paper's visual reporting of sporting attractions. The page fills with closely set columns of theatrical notices, advertisements, and entertainment news alongside smaller woodcut illustrations scattered throughout. As a newsstand paper preceding later publications like Variety and Billboard, the Clipper served a mass audience hungry for illustrated accounts of stage performers, circus acts, prizefighters, horse racing, and emerging sports. The format—ornamental header, prominent scene block, and text-dense layout—became the template for American entertainment journalism.
