New York Clipper, Vol. IV, No. 32
The New York Clipper, November 29, 1856. This weekly trade paper led American entertainment journalism with densely packed columns covering theater, sporting events, and circus performances. The front page features an ornamental masthead depicting harbor and urban scenes, framed by classical figures. Below runs a prominent oval-framed portrait of four men identified as "Champion Oarsmen of New Brunswick," with detailed accounts of their rowing accomplishments. The Clipper's format—engraved illustrations paired with reportage—enabled its mass readership to follow entertainment and sporting celebrities through pictures and text. Founded in the 1850s, it established the template for later entertainment weeklies like Variety and Billboard, serving as the primary newsstand source for theatrical notices, prizefight reports, turf news, and emerging baseball coverage.
