New York Clipper, Vol. IV, No. 29
· Saturday, November 8, 1856

The New York Clipper, Vol. IV, No. 29 (November 8, 1856) displays the characteristic format of this influential theatrical and sporting weekly. The elaborately engraved masthead depicts harbor scenes and classical figures flanking the title, while the front page features a wood engraving of a harness racing scene—a horse and sulky driver in motion, capturing the speed and spectacle of American sport. Below runs dense columns of news and commentary on stage performances, circuses, prizefighting, and the turf. Published at four cents, the Clipper served as the leading trade weekly for American popular entertainment, pioneering the use of illustration to help a mass audience consume news and identify heroes across music halls, minstrel stages, and sporting venues. The paper established a template followed by later entertainment trade publications.
