Maravelli, greedy and gambling-addicted, attempts to penetrate the mystery to gain blackmail material. Simultaneously, the Earl of Curzon and Colonel Malpas arrive with three criminal accomplices known as "fishers of men"—Kobolt, Hernani, and Walden—apparently orchestrating an abduction. Subsequent chapters develop themes of romantic entanglement, deception, legal crisis, and social intrigue involving characters named Venetia, a captain, various conspirators, and a sham duel, culminating in an execution and confrontations between public officials and aristocrats.
