Puck Hopes — That Philadelphia Will Follow the Good Example of Brooklyn and New York
Louis Dalrymple stages a parlor scene in which three cities are personified: Brooklyn and New York appear as matronly women in large bonnets labeled with their city names, while Philadelphia is a third female figure hovering hopefully. Each woman attends a seated man—labeled with his name or 'Mayoralty'—who clutches a scroll reading 'Reform.' The central figure is Pattison, the reform candidate. Brooklyn's and New York's men sit comfortably in their chairs, implying successful reform administrations already won; Philadelphia's man remains unsettled, the prize still in play. The caption frames the cartoon as civic encouragement: two cities have set the 'good example,' and Puck urges Philadelphia to follow. The figures are drawn in the broad, caricatured style typical of 1890s American political illustration—exaggerated features were the era's standard shorthand for political type rather than individual dignity.
