Psyche (Puck Easter Cover)
Gordon Grant's cover for *Puck*'s Easter 1909 issue depicts Psyche—the soul-figure of classical myth—kneeling at the edge of a lily pond, gazing at her own reflection in the water, a direct allusion to the Narcissus mirror-myth. She wears a loose Greco-Roman shift and an extravagant pink rose Easter bonnet, yoking pagan myth to the season's fashionable millinery. Easter lilies flank her in an oval Art Nouveau frame; the caption reads simply PSYCHE. Puck ran straight decorative covers for holiday issues. Artist Gordon Grant, later celebrated as a marine painter, shows assured draftsmanship and confident color printing throughout.
