Astounding Stories of Super-Science

This issue opens with "Dodd's Discovery" (author unnamed in visible text), a science fiction adventure set in Antarctic exploration circa 1930. The Travers Expedition, seeking the precise location of the South Pole, discovers an enormous fossilized beetle shell—four to five feet tall with a three-inch-thick exterior—near the pole. Archaeologist Jim Dodd hypothesizes these were giant insects from the Tertiary Era. The discovery tantalizes him with the possibility that the previous Greystoke Expedition's erratic scientist Bram left records before mysteriously vanishing. When Dodd and pilot Tommy Travers fly back to investigate the next morning, they encounter a violent Antarctic storm. As they struggle through deteriorating conditions, the weather mysteriously transitions from blizzard to warm mist and fog. Tommy glimpses patches of green grass beneath the clouds—an impossible discovery suggesting unknown warm regions near the pole.
