This catalog entry documents U.S. Air Force investigative records concerning an unidentified aircraft sighting over Chapel Hill, North Carolina on July 7, 1948. Multiple witnesses—including a Naval Reserve lieutenant, a mathematics instructor at the University of North Carolina, and an Army Infantry captain—reported three unconventional aircraft passing overhead between 2114 and 2115 hours at extreme altitude traveling at high speed, bearing northeast. No craft were sighted visually, exhaust trails were not visible, and characteristic jet sound was reported under clear weather conditions. The documents include initial incident reports, a teletype message from Air Service Command Intelligence, formal requests for witness statements, and Dr. Hynek's evaluations categorizing 240 incidents by astronomical probability and alternative explanations including balloons, rockets, and miscellaneous phenomena.
