August 1952 USAF Historical Archives article on unidentified aerial objects (UAOs, later called UFOs). The piece examines sightings reported by university professors, including one where Dr. Robinson observed an irregularly-shaped yellow light with dark diffuse areas in formation. Objects appeared approximately 12 inches across at 30-40 feet distance, producing pale-yellow blinking light while moving silently. The professors documented 12 "official" sightings requiring at least two witnesses each. The article discusses the "Green Fireballs" phenomenon observed over the Southwest U.S. (1948-1950), with Dr. Lincoln La Paz arguing they were not meteors based on their horizontal trajectories, absence of sound, and unusual characteristics. The USAF's investigation efforts—Project Sign, later Project Chugot, finally Project Blue Book—are described. The article provides extensive scientific explanations for UAO reports: astronomical phenomena account for nearly 40 percent (meteors, Venus, Mars), while another 3 percent derive from misidentified aircraft, weather balloons, and familiar objects. Weather balloons and rawinsondes (RAOBs), expandable to 20-25 feet at high altitudes, are identified as likely sources, especially appearing disc-like at 85,000 feet. A 1947 hoax involving a crude pie-pan device launched from a Shreveport building roof is documented.
