Amazing Stories, May 1960

This document is not a pulp magazine issue but rather a U.S. Air Force UFO sighting report from Project 10073 (the Blue Book project). Dated May 27, 1960, it documents an aerial observation east of Japan at 42°15'N latitude. A KLM DC-7C aircraft crew observed a single circular object, approximately one-quarter the size of the full moon, with a bright white body and red tail. The tail, composed of what appeared to be pieces breaking from the body, extended four times the object's diameter. Observed for 2-3 seconds, the object arced downward from an easterly direction, descending from approximately 50-60 degrees to 35-40 degrees above the horizon before disappearing into the distance. The Air Force initially evaluated it as a possible meteor, though intelligence personnel suggested it might be a meteorite or satellite reentry.
