*In the Shadow of the Tower* (1934), the third Dana Girls Mystery by Carolyn Keene, follows teenage sisters Jean and Louise Dana as they become entangled in a complex investigation. While skating near Starhurst School for Girls, the sisters overhear a prank being plotted by rivals Lettie Briggs and Ina Mason, then discover a mysterious hunchbacked figure reading a letter in a cave. When the figure flees in terror, a fox snatches away both a thousand-dollar bill and a letter—the cripple's entire fortune. The "boy" is revealed to be Josephine "Josy" Sykes, who has run away from the Home for Crippled Children at Bonny Lake. The girls commit to helping recover her money and uncover the mystery surrounding Josy's past and the crucial letter. The narrative includes chapters on strange occurrences, hidden identities, and mounting suspense as the Dana sisters employ their detective skills.
