Thrilling Adventures Among the Indians This 1851 collection by John Frost, LL.D., compiles historical narratives of conflicts between British colonists and Native Americans over nearly two and a half centuries. The work contains approximately fifty documented accounts—many from eyewitness testimony or historical records—chronicling border raids, captivities, and military engagements primarily in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and Texas. Narratives include: Mrs. Frances Scott's 1785 capture by thirteen Indians near Kentucky (her four youngest children killed); Captain Isaac Steward's explorations potentially reaching California goldfields before 1782; women's combat prowess and escapes from captivity; frontier warfare incidents; individual encounters with various tribes including Comanches, Lipans, and Sioux; massacres and counter-attacks; and accounts of specific figures like Tecumseh, Carson, and Major McCulloch. The volume presents both acts of cruelty and instances of Indian generosity, courage, and patriotism. Illustrated throughout with engravings by W. Croome and other artists.
