Adventure Magazine Cover, April 3, 1918

This first April 1918 issue of *Adventure* contains an editorial mix of contemporary fiction. Samuel Alexander White's "Ambush" (featured complete novel) opens with Factor Paul Carlisle of the Hudson's Bay Company traveling by canoe through Lake Superior during the fur trade wars, as the Northwest Company blockades Grande Portage. An Irish-French voyageur named Eugene Drummond intercepts him disguised as a Nor'wester to report that a Free-Trader named Ralph Wayne is undercutting both major fur companies on the Saskatchewan. Edgar Wallace contributes "The Fetish Stick," a colonial tale where Commissioner Sanders confronts a West African witch-doctor named Buluta. Other stories include W.C. Tuttle's comedic "Upside Down or Backwards," Roy P. Churchill's naval adventure "A Shift Into Reverse," Hugh Pendexter's frontier tale "Red Toll" set on the Santa Fe Trail, and William Patterson White's serial continuation "Hidden Trails." Maritime fiction appears in T. Nichols's "Captain Findlay's Last Voyage."
