"Sold Foreign" by W. Townend is a maritime fiction piece centered on a Royal Navy officer on leave, Mr. Wendell, who unexpectedly joins a tramp steamer as second mate. Wendell replaces an injured officer for the voyage from the River Fal to Cardiff. Captain Dallory, a longtime commander of the aging Ormesby—now sold and destined for foreign service—has assembled a nostalgic crew of former shipmates. The story explores tensions aboard the rusted vessel as Wendell, accustomed to naval discipline and modern ships, encounters an apprehensive merchant crew seemingly harboring undisclosed anxieties. The atmosphere grows tense at dinner as the other officers greet him with indifference or hostility, particularly the disagreeable second engineer Hennessy. Wendell's charm meets resistance in this unfamiliar mercantile world.
