Air Stories exemplified the pulp magazine boom of the 1920s, when publishers discovered that aviation—still exotic and dangerous—could anchor entire adventure narratives. This cover depicts the central drama of the featured novelette *The Night Hawk* by George Bruce: a stunt pilot in mid-leap between two biplanes, one engulfed in flames, while a third aircraft pursues from below. The illustration captures the magazine's selling proposition—thrills derived from human skill pitted against mechanical failure and enemy pursuit. At twenty cents, Air Stories competed with dozens of similar titles by packaging episodic adventure narratives with painted covers that promised danger, speed, and technical spectacle. Such magazines established visual and narrative conventions that comics would inherit: the dynamic action pose, the close call, the intersection of human courage and technological peril.
