This installment of "Friar Tuck's Captive," the opening chapter of a Robin Hood serial, depicts the friar's arrival at the greenwood camp with Solomon of Sheffield, a Jewish moneylender, captured as a ransom hostage. When Friar Tuck boasts of his capture, the outlaws greet him with laughter. Robin Hood interrogates the prisoner, learning that Tuck's rough handling caused Solomon to lose a mule carrying a hundred crowns. Robin Hood sets the ransom at five hundred crowns. Solomon reveals his daughter Miriam has been abducted by Guy Montferris, Baron of Roystone, a notorious villain favored by King Richard. Moved by the father's distress, Robin Hood reduces the ransom by one hundred crowns and promises to investigate the daughter's fate.
