Meanwhile, Valbort guides his twenty-five men—many suspected members of Russia's "Terrorists" organization—through treacherous mountain terrain to their hidden riverside stronghold. The girl has been sent ahead. Dagmar anticipates restoration to his former St. Petersburg position upon successful completion of the dangerous journey.
