The Argosy

The Argosy, Volume V (December 1867–May 1868) This volume of the Victorian periodical *The Argosy*, edited by Mrs. Henry Wood, collects fiction, poetry, and non-fiction from the period. The lead serial is "Anne Hereford" by the author of *East Lynne*, following a young girl in mourning traveling alone by train to visit her aunt Mrs. Edwin Barley in England after losing both parents (her father Colonel Hereford died in India years prior). The narrative depicts her solitary journey, uncertain reception, and arrival at the estate. The volume contains additional serials and short stories including "Aunt Felicity: A Norman Story" by K. S. Macquoid, "Half an Hour's Walk in Normandy" by Hesba Stretton, and pieces by the Reverend Charles Kingsley. Verse contributions include work by Christina Rossetti, Dora Greenwell, and others. Non-fiction includes travel writing on Dieppe and accounts of Abyssinian history.
