The Argosy

The Argosy, Volume XVII (January-June 1874) This issue of *The Argosy*, edited by Mrs. Henry Wood, contains serialized novels, short stories, poetry, and illustrated features. The lead serial is "In the Dead of Night," beginning with a dramatic opening: Lionel Bering navigates a cliff path during a violent storm near Melcham and witnesses a stranger stumbling toward a dangerous chasm. Despite warnings, the man falls into the abyss. Bering attempts a perilous descent via "The Smugglers' Staircase" to rescue him but is stopped by his fellow Bunce, insisting the victim is dead. Other notable content includes works by the author of *East Lynne*—"Adam Grainger," "All Souls' Eve," "The Diamond Bracelet," "A Dream from Heaven," and "Five Thousand a Year"; Christina Rossetti's poem "A Dirge"; essays and stories by Johnny Ludlow; and illustrated features including "A Night in a Monastery" and "Drive to the Land's End." Poetry contributors include Emma Rhodes and Anne Beale. Illustrations by Harry Furniss and A. Hopkins accompany key narratives.
