The Argosy

The Argosy, Volume XXIX (1880) This volume of *The Argosy*, edited by Mrs. Henry Wood, contains serialized fiction and shorter narratives spanning January to June 1880. The principal serial is "The Mysteries of Heron Dyke," illustrated by M. Ellen Edwards, which follows Gilbert Denison, a dissolute young gentleman awaiting his inheritance of an estate in Norfolk. Facing his deathbed, the elder Gilbert Denison confronts his nephew about his reckless London life—his gaming debts, squandered fortune, and dissolution—raising the threat of disinheriting him in favor of a more virtuous cousin. The volume also includes "Verena Fontaine's Rebellion" by Johnny Ludlow (serialized), "About Norway" by Charles W. Wood with illustrations, and shorter stories including "Daylesford: A Story of Oxford Life," "The Exiles of Siberia," and "Between Two Stools." Contributors include Emma Rhodes, Charles Hervey, Sydney Grey, and Anne Beale. Poetry and observational travel writing appear throughout.
