Gold Grabbers by William Wallace Cook. Mining story wherein Lee Bremerton, impoverished prospector, accepts a $500/month offer from his former partner Silas Deane—now a wealthy mining magnate—to manage a declining Arizona mine near Phoenix. The property, previously profitable, has lost output and seen two superintendents shot. Deane claims a gang seeks to freeze him out and needs Bremerton's expertise to restore production and justify a half-million-dollar sale to a syndicate. Bremerton insists the operation remain honest. The narrative explores the contrasted fortunes of the two former blanket-mates: Deane prospered through questionable means while Bremerton's principles kept him poor. Despite reservation about previous superintendents' fates, Bremerton accepts, desperate for income.
