Cheshire-Cheshire Cate, aboard the practice ship *Monongahela* in Lisbon. Cate is pursuing a rare pearl for a necklace from the collection of Juanita Windom's father, a pearl enthusiast. Clif romances Juanita despite Cate's interest; when news arrives that the king will visit the ship, Cate reacts with visible shock and alarm.
