"The Going of the Great Gordon" by Edgar Franklin
*All-Story Magazine*, May 1907
This adventure serial follows Henry Randall, a New York jeweler, who has recently returned from a six-month global journey. Randall recounts to his friend Dr. Sheldon how millionaire P. E. Gardner commissioned him to acquire the Great Gordon—an enormous, recently mined South African diamond—as an anniversary gift for Gardner's young wife, Marjorie Pelton. Tasked with securing the stone abroad, cutting it, and returning it within a deadline, Randall undertook a perilous expedition involving disputes over ownership, a dangerous nighttime departure from the mine, and armed confrontation with brigands. Now back in New York, Randall carries the invaluable gem in a custom leather harness beneath his clothing. When Dr. Sheldon persuades him to view the stone, the narrative ends as an unexpected visitor—Fenway Pelton, Mrs. Gardner's brother—arrives at Sheldon's office, finding Randall exposed with the diamond still in hand.
