The Mohegan Maiden

Catalog Note Beadle's Dime Novels No. 118 (February 26, 1867) contains two stories. The lead feature is "The Water Waif: A Tale of Ancient New York" by Charles P. Sumner, described as a new romance of early Manhattan told in the manner of Wilkie Collins. The secondary serial is "The Mohegan Maiden; or, The Stranger of the Settlement: A Story of King Philip's War" by James L. Bowen. The latter depicts the 1676 conflict during which colonists displaced Native peoples. The narrative follows Archibald Turner, a white orphan raised in the colonies, and Christian (Hawk's-wing), a Mohegan brave whom Turner rescued from a bear attack and certain death by a Narragansett scalper. Now allied, the two scouts observe Narragansett warriors capturing a Mohegan woman, Shining Star. Despite overwhelming odds, Turner and Christian resolve to rescue her, preparing to ambush the captors at a riverbank.
