The Silent Hunter; or, The Scowl Hall Mystery

A Black man named Dick stumbles upon them, mumbling nervously about being mistreated and hearing blood will flow. Custaloga silences him, then drinks and eats with Harvey before they prepare to journey to a block-house where Amy and Jane Moss—daughters of Judge Moss—are sheltered. The narrative then shifts to describe the settlers' fortified compound in detail: a stockaded enclosure with a central residence, outbuildings, defensive structures, and a block-house designed for protection against Indigenous raids.
