Beadle's Dime Novels, the semi-monthly periodical that pioneered mass-market fiction, presented adventure stories at affordable prices through wood-pulp serialization. This installment of Captain Mayne Reid's *The Yellow Chief* depicts a tense frontier scene: a bound captive surrounded by armed figures in a wilderness setting. The engraved illustration captures the serial's dramatic tension—a hallmark of dime novel marketing that emphasized conflict, exoticism, and survival. Published by the American News Company in New York, Beadle's Dime Novels established the template for action-adventure pulp that would dominate popular fiction for decades, directly influencing the comic book format that emerged in the 1930s.
