BLACK ARROW, THE AVENGER: JUDGE LYNCH ON THE BORDER This issue features two works of frontier fiction published by Beadle and Company. The lead story is "The Mustang-Hunters: The Beautiful Amazon of the Hidden Valley," a tale by Frederick Whittaker (compared favorably to Mayne Reid's work) set on the Staked Plains of northwestern Texas. It follows a young hunter pursuing a remarkable black mustang, aided by a Texas Ranger and a desperate man; their pursuit leads to encounters with Comanches and a hidden civilization, culminating in romance and struggle. The second serial is Edward S. Willett's "Black Arrow, the Avenger: Judge Lynch on the Border." Ben Blood, a hunter, leaves Paul Roder's outlaw gang and warns Colonel Landry of impending danger; captured the next morning, he faces execution by Roder's men. The narrative describes frontier lawlessness, a frontier tavern gathering, and introduces George Warner, an Easterner staying at Colonel Landry's plantation, reputedly courting the colonel's daughter.
