Beadle's Dime Novels No. 50: The Black Ship
Catalog Description *The Black Ship*, by John S. Warner (author of "Brethren of the Coast" and "Wreck of the Albion"), is a maritime adventure novel. During a violent storm, the merchant vessel carrying Mr. Snowden, his sister Mrs. Bryce, and her daughter Clara begins to sink, with Captain and crew losing all hope. The British man-of-war nearby, commanded by the prudent Lieutenant Harold Merton, detects distress signals and attempts a rescue. Merton leads a daring boat operation to extract passengers, successfully saving them, but arrives too late to retrieve the remaining crew. The merchantman sinks with those still aboard in a climactic scene. The rescued party descends to the man-of-war's cabin where Merton—admiring Clara—introduces himself formally, offering his continued assistance and expressing hope for future acquaintance. The narrative emphasizes maritime peril, naval heroism, and the beginning of romantic connection.
