This issue contains two serialized works of fiction. "Amos Plot; or, The Renegade's Child" by Mrs. Ann S. Stephens is a historical romance set during the governorship of Frontenac in French Canada, featuring an Indian woman, her daughter Mahaska, and other Indian and white characters in a drama exploring themes of family and cultural encounter. "Off and On; or, The Ranger's First Cruise" by John S. Warner is a naval adventure set in Paris during winter 1777, following an unnamed American sea captain negotiating with a young man named Fletcher who seeks passage on an American vessel of war. Fletcher introduces a second American character, the eccentric Hezekiah Hand from Maine, a trader and mimic recently shipwrecked on the French coast.
