Beadle's Dime Novels No. 70: The Indian Queen
· June 28, 1864

This issue of Beadle's Dime Novels (No. 71) contains two featured works. "The Lost Trail: A Legend of the Far West" by Edward S. Ellis follows an Irishman named Teppy MacFadden through adventures in Upper Minnesota forty-four years prior, emphasizing wilderness life and comic elements. The second work, "The Indian Queen" by Mrs. Ann S. Stephens, dominates this excerpt. Set at an Iroquois council-fire on Seneca Lake, it depicts Mahaska (Katharine, daughter of French Governor-General Frontenac and a Seneca chief's daughter), who has been installed as principal ruler following a dying prophet's wishes. The narrative centers on her consolidation of power against dissenting chiefs, particularly the Fox, who questions her authority. Mahaska employs eloquence, spiritual claims of divine visions, and manipulation of tribal superstitions—including ominous weather—to silence opposition and enforce obedience, threatening to abandon her people if defied.
