Beadle's Half Dime Library No. 173
Catalog Note: Dandy Rock's Rival; or, The Hunted Maid of Taos This issue of Beadle and Adams's weekly (November 1881) features "Dandy Rock's Rival; or, The Hunted Maid of Taos" by George Waldo Browne, part of the author's continuing Dandy Rock series. The narrative follows Rock Randel, a young mountaineer of renowned courage, and his three companions—Reckless Ray, Mountain Jim, and Prairie Paul—as they travel from Bittideau Pass toward the settlement of Taos. En route, they witness a terrifying pursuit: a mysterious rider mounted upon a gray wolf chases Mexican horsemen across the plain. Subsequently discovering that the rider has killed several Mexicans and that a young white woman named Luella St. Dell has been captured by Indians, the mountaineers mount a daring rescue, attacking the Indian band and retrieving her. The girl, orphaned or in service, requests assistance reaching Taos, which the generous Randel and his companions immediately offer.
