Museum Catalog Note This July 1881 issue of a pulp weekly contains "The Boy Hercules; or, The Prairie Tramps," a Dakota frontier romance by Oll Coomes. The serial follows Frank Morton, a young Indian Agent traveling on foot across winter Dakota plains after his horse becomes crippled. Lost in a blizzard en route to his wedding, Morton witnesses a mysterious elk-drawn sledge carrying a muffled, seemingly unconscious driver. He eventually discovers The Good Samaritan Ranch, a legendary isolated cabin that offers free shelter and provisions to all travelers—hunters, Indians, and outlaws alike—maintained through anonymous, mysterious supply arrangements. The narrative explores the ranch's enigmatic reputation for maintaining peace among potentially hostile parties. Subsequent chapters feature characters including "Bloodhound Dick." The story combines frontier adventure with mystery elements centered on the ranch's unexplained benevolence and origins.
