Beadle's Half Dime Library No. 28

This installment, "The Prince of the Pistol; or, Deadwood Dick in Disguise" (No. 28), is a sequel to "Double-Daggers" by Edward L. Wheeler. In Montana, elderly hunter Zeke Ransom shelters a refined young woman fleeing persecution. She reveals she was married to a wealthy, brutal man from a family feuding with hers; he seeks her death and that of her eighteen-month-old twins to inherit freely. After writing her confession and hiding it in Ransom's cache, she watches helplessly as armed pursuers ambush and kill both Ransom and the woman as she stands in the cabin doorway. The narrative shifts to Deadwood on Sunday, depicting the rough mining town teeming with activity. The story introduces the western adventure-serial genre typical of Beadle and Adams publications.
