Beadle's Half Dime Library No. 31

This installment of "Keen-Knife, Prince of the Prairies" by Oll Coomes follows Rob Radcliff, a young hunter, who observes immigrant wagons crossing the prairie and suspects danger from roaming Sioux. He discovers the mysterious "Hidden Home," a self-sufficient settlement on the Raccoon River owned by the Spanish-born Manuel La Mort. Meeting La Mort's beautiful eighteen-year-old daughter Camilla, Rob learns her father pursues some undisclosed evil calling and is allied with local Indians. La Mort interrupts their conversation and attacks Rob with a whip; their struggle is interrupted by three Sioux warriors who capture and nearly scalp Rob. Keen-Knife, described as a mixed-heritage Indian youth raised by white settlers and known as the "Prince of the Prairies," emerges from hiding to rescue Rob. He kills one attacker with a rifle shot and tomahawks another, causing La Mort and the injured savages to flee toward the settlement.
