Beadle's Half Dime Library No. 409

This 1885 Beadle and Adams dime novel, "Hercules, the Dumb Destroyer," is authored by Oll Coomes. The story opens with a mysterious aerial visitor descending via parachute over Dakota plains where fifty Sioux warriors camp, their superstitious awe deliberately exploited through claims of divine authority. The visitor is later revealed to be Skylark Sam, a border detective using a balloon for reconnaissance. The narrative shifts to Colonel Owens leading an immigrant train of forty settlers toward the fertile Niobrara valley, accompanied by his seventeen-year-old daughter Zulima and guide Niobrara Jack. The settlers carry supplies and cattle, anticipating establishing a colony despite known dangers from outlaws and hostile Indians. Colonel Owens discovers a fresh corpse with a red-shafted arrow on the trail ahead, foreshadowing conflict.
